Shanghai, February 26th 2014. Whether food packaging or PET bottles – both contain an increasingly important raw material: plastic. According to the trade association, Plastic Europe, global plastic production has risen to around 300 million tons. China belongs to one of the largest producers in the world. An essential intermediate product of plastic is PTA (Pure Terephthalic Acid). EagleBurgmann, a Freudenberg Group company, is delivering the largest agitator seal weighing 1.5 tons for use in a PTA (Pure Terephthalic Acid) plant in China.
"We have manufactured this seal in close cooperation with our customers in just 20 weeks," explained Peter Totzauer, EagleBurgmann Sales Engineer. The order included 13 agitator seals and supply systems. The dimensions and weight of the 1.5 ton mechanical seal presented plant engineers and mechanics with considerable new challenges. The heavy seal, comparable with the weight of a digger, is the world's largest seal so far. The agitator has a top entry drive of 2,800 KW and weighs 84 tons, with the gear weighing around 20 tons. The seal was tested on the agitator test rig with a rotational speed of 58 revolutions per minute. Following a successful 100 hour test run, the team successfully overcame all the challenges. "Proper functioning of the seal is an absolutely important criteria," according to Totzauer. As a PTA plant failure is very expensive, the seals have to be able to withstand the conditions and have a very high degree of operational safety.
High-quality polyester can be found in textiles, plastics or food packaging. Plastics are processed for components in the automotive industry and serve the manufacture of paint, adhesives, components or insulation. The versatility of plastics makes the material an all-rounder.
