Clean drinking water for a better life

Thanks to the efforts of Freudenberg employees, a village in Indian now has clean, filtered water. An adequate water supply not only has health benefits, but also enhances educational opportunities.

No water, no life. Water is the most precious natural resource, the elixir of life. Essential to health and to hygiene. For a viable economy, water is key and serves as a source of energy. But for many of us, clean water isn’t on tap whenever it’s needed – it’s a luxury.

Millions of people spend hours each day searching for and collecting water. While abundant in some areas, clean drinking water is completely lacking in others. As in India.

For the sake of Indian children: They appreciate clean water from an “Aqua Tower” donated by Freudenberg.

Only one in two has clean water

Less than 50 percent of the population in India has access to clean drinking water. Put another way: more than half a billion people have none. For such people, clean water is a luxury they cannot afford. Oftentimes, local sources of water are chemically contaminated or riddled with pathogens that cause disease. So, to help provide access to clean water in India’s poorest regions, Freudenberg launched a partnership with Planet Water.

As part of an initiative and together with the non-profit organization, the company donated an Aqua Tower to the Indian village of Pimpale Khalsa.

The water filtration system purifies contaminated water from various sources such as rivers, wells or streams and turns it into potable water. It filters out bacteria, viruses, microorganisms and other pathogens. Purification saves resources because the precious raw material no longer has to be tapped from other sources. This can prevent an even greater water shortage. The system produces up to 1,000 liters of drinking water per hour. In Pimpale Khalsa, it meets the daily drinking water needs of 2,000 people.

In addition to the clean drinking water solution, support also includes a training program for teachers at the local school. They are responsible for teaching their students how to use the Aqua Tower. “Thanks to the donation, over 400 students and their families now have access to filtered water. In times of the corona pandemic, this is particularly important,” says Nighojkar, a 6th grade teacher. He is also grateful for the child-oriented content of the training program on health and hygiene. The project itself has another enormous benefit for the students in Pimpale Khalsa: They no longer have to spend hours collecting water with their families; instead, they have the time to attend school on a regular basis.

Thanks to the donation, over 400 students and their families now have access to filtered water. In times of the corona pandemic, this is particularly important.
