The areas surrounding our sites play an important role in our success. In every state, country and community in which we operate, we respect our social responsibility and are recognized as good neighbors. In accordance with our corporate culture, we implement large and small projects for people in need across the globe. Two examples of this commitment are the Freudenberg projects in China and India.
China: Earthquake relief in Haijin
On 12 May 2008, an earthquake completely destroyed an elementary school in the Chinese city of Haijin. In response, Freudenberg founded the charity "Freudenberg Help e.V." to assist with the rebuilding. It is one of the company's largest aid projects outside Germany. On 31 August 2009, the village school was reopened, providing facilities for up to 300 children. Freudenberg maintains close contact with the school. Among other activities, we organize an annual one-week summer school. Each year, more than 50 Freudenberg colleagues help out at the school, teaching students English, Chinese culture and sports.
India: Training Center in Nagapattinam
In 2004, a tsunami hit wide coastal regions in Southeast Asia. 10 Freudenberg employees were directly affected and one colleague killed. In response, Freudenberg decided to establish a training center in Nagapattinam, India. At the center, young people are given an opportunity to qualify for trades that is unique in India. The dual academic and vocational training covers the trades of welder, fitter, motor mechanic and machinist. Extending across an area of around 57,000 square meters, the center now encompasses four classrooms, four workshops, planning rooms and a canteen. There is also an in-house library and a computer room where up to 130 students can deepen their knowledge outside the classroom.
